ALOHA TO MY OHANA

ALOHA TO MY OHANA

To my Fellow Early Childhood Bloggers,

Welcome to my blog site. Let me say: Aloha to my Ohana, which means "Welcome to my Family".

I am an Asian American who migrated in the US in 1997. I came from the Philippines and Filipino/ Tagalog is my first language. I migrated here in the US to start a family. I am now living here in Hawaii with my husband and three children. I am currently working as an Assistant Director at Ford Island Child Development Center in Pearl Harbor.

This is going to be an interesting journey for all of us and I am looking forward to blog with all of you.

NAEYC and DEC Codes of Ethics

These are the three ideals contained in the NAEYC and DEC codes of ethics that are meaningful to me:
 1. I-1.8 - To support the right of each child to play and learn in an inclusive environment that meets the needs of children with or without disabilities.
Inclusion benefits both children with or without disabilities. Both of them learn important aspect of social skills such as making new friends. Children with disabilities or with special abilities learn to become a part of a community. On the other hand, Children without disabilities learn and understand that disability is part of natural part of life. This ideal is very meaningful to me because every child will now have the opportunity to live a normal life. Each child will be recognized base on t heir abilities and not their disabilities
  1. I-2.4 - To listen to families, acknowledge and build upon their strengths and competencies, and learn from families as we support them in their task of nurturing children.
I am here to support our families by providing programs that are developmentally and      age appropriate for their children. We are not here to replace parents and families but to support them in nurturing their children.
3.       We shall honor and respect the rights, knowledge, and skills of the multidisciplinary colleagues with whom we work recognizing their unique contributions to children, families and the field of early childhood special education. (DEC Code of Ethics)
I took this ideal from DEC Code of Ethics under Professional Practice (Professional Collaboration), this ideal is very meaningful to me because we recognize that even though we have one goal in our center, it is really important to understand that our colleagues have their own unique way of doing things and achieving our goals. We need to learn and respect each other’s differences for providing quality childcare to our children. Everyone is as important as the other.
